Adelaide United’s U19s were handed a serious test on Day One of the Otten Innovation Cup, taking on two of the tournament’s biggest names in SE Palmeiras and PSV Eindhoven.
The Reds faced a demanding double-header in the Netherlands, using the opportunity to measure themselves against two renowned academies and gain valuable experience on the international stage.
Adelaide United 0-3 SE Palmeiras
The day opened against Brazilian giants SE Palmeiras, with both sides starting brightly and chances coming at either end early.
Palmeiras opened the scoring in the seventh minute when captain Thiago Soares Nogueira reacted quickest to a loose ball from a corner to make it 1-0.
Adelaide worked to respond, but Palmeiras continued to pose the greater attacking threat. Following the drinks break, Miquel Cinoncelli Bilong doubled the advantage in the 13th minute, before Nogueira headed home his second from another corner moments later to make it 3-0.
The Reds found it difficult to break down an efficient Palmeiras outfit, with the Brazilian side taking a three-goal advantage into the second half.
As the heat intensified, the match became increasingly scrappy, with neither side able to add to the scoreline in the second half.

Adelaide United 1-4 PSV
There was little time to rest before Adelaide returned to the pitch against hosts PSV Eindhoven.
The Reds produced a much more even opening half, matching their Dutch opponents for large periods and creating opportunities of their own.
Nikolas Jovanovic came closest to breaking the deadlock before half-time, striking the crossbar, while Adelaide United eventually found the back of the net through Joey Garuccio to ensure the sides went into the break level at 1-1.
The second half saw the game open up, with PSV beginning to create more opportunities as the match progressed.
Mathieu Buyens and Givenciyo Sabajo found the net to put PSV 3-1 ahead, before Loek Schakenraad added a fourth with a composed chip over the keeper.
Despite the final margin, the match provided another valuable test for the Reds against a world-renowned academy.

Two big tests, plenty to learn
Day One presented exactly the type of challenge Adelaide United travelled to Europe for.
Facing SE Palmeiras and PSV Eindhoven in the space of a single day gave the Reds an opportunity to test their football against two of the biggest academies in world football, while experiencing the intensity, speed and physical demands of international youth competition.
With another day of tournament football still to come, Adelaide will look to take the lessons from Day One into their remaining matches and continue building valuable experience on the international stage when they look to face Premier League giants, Manchester United on Day Two.
