United Media sat down with new signing Mitchell Smith to learn more about his journey to Adelaide, the experiences that shaped him during his time in Spain, and why he believes the Reds are the right fit for the next chapter of his career.
Mitchell Smith did not arrive in Adelaide looking for the easiest next step.
He arrived because, after years developing in Spain, he saw a team that played the sort of football he wanted to be part of.
The young striker had spent time watching the Reds before making the move and quickly saw similarities between Adelaide United’s approach and the football education he had received overseas.
“I was watching some of the games and thought that my player profile would fit well with the team and how the squad tries to play,” Smith said.
“It was my first choice, and I’m lucky to be here.”
That fit is important to Smith.
His years in Spain shaped him into a player who wants to be involved in combinations, find the ball in tight areas and connect with teammates rather than simply relying on direct play.
“I’ve had lots of great experiences, playing against top teams and with top coaches,” he said.
“It’s maybe a smarter type of football, just a different style in general.
“I love linking up and playing one-twos. I think that can come into play here because the team likes to play football.”
It is a description that should appeal to Reds supporters.
Smith wants touches, wants responsibility in possession and wants to create.
“Fans can expect someone who wants the ball, wants to link up and has lots of heart and aggression,” he said.
“I like to get touches on the ball, do exciting things, create chances and score goals.”
For all the excitement about what he can offer, Smith knows his first task is to earn his place.
His early relationship with Head Coach Airton Andrioli has already helped set those expectations.
“He’s been great with me,” Smith said.
“He talks to me one-on-one and tells me exactly what he wants from me.
“He’s also good in the hard moments when he has to tell me I’m doing something wrong. He keeps pushing and pushing, which is obviously what you want.”
Smith described Andrioli’s welcome as almost fatherly, something that has helped him settle quickly into a new environment.
“Everyone has been really welcoming,” he said.
“There are great people here, great coaches and great players. I’ve settled in really well and I’m really excited.”
There is also a sense that Smith understands the opportunity in front of him.
Adelaide United has built a reputation for giving young players a genuine pathway, and Smith has paid attention to those who have gone before him.
“Playing for Australia is a big dream of mine, but playing for Adelaide is an honour in itself,” he said.
“You look at the calibre of players who have come through here and gone on to do great things for club and country.
“I want to follow in those footsteps.”
For now, though, the focus is much closer to home: training well, pushing for minutes and eventually getting the chance to experience Coopers Stadium in red.
And Smith already has a strong sense of what that shirt represents.
“It’s a heavy badge to wear on your chest, but I’ll do it with honour,” he said.
“I’m a big believer in, ‘die for the badge or don’t wear it.’
“I’m really excited to play at Coopers with the fans there watching.”
