With the match on a knife’s edge, Fiona Worts sealed the three points for Adelaide United with a composed finish against Canberra United.
Adelaide was under enormous pressure in the second-half, and had hardly ventured forward prior to the 25-year-old scoring against the run of play on 77 minutes and restoring the two-goal buffer.
It was the English forward’s second goal of the season and fourth career goal as a Red following an instant involvement from Japanese midfielder Reona Omiya, who spotted Worts free on the edge of the area.
“We have a saying that 2-1 is a dangerous scoreline, so I think that third goal was important,” she told Paramount+ in a post-match interview.
Worts was also involved in both first-half goals scored by Dylan Holmes and Chelsie Dawber, grabbing the assist for the latter.
She said the girls had to work extremely hard to come away with the positive result with Adelaide managing to notch just its second-ever victory in the Capital and first in over seven years.
“It was a big game, it’s been a while since United has won here so definitely a big win for us,” she said.
“I think we just grafted, if we weren’t winning first balls, we were getting in there for second balls and it was just hard work.”
After an up and down start to the campaign, Worts said it was crucial to prevail for the second week in a row as they push for finals football.
“We’re definitely pushing for that (a top-four spot),” she continued.
“It was starting to look a bit inconsistent at the start of the season, so getting that second win on the bounce is definitely important for us going forward.”
