Adelaide United confirms Fiona Worts departure for overseas opportunity

Adelaide United can confirm striker Fiona Worts will depart the Club after securing an overseas opportunity, with the transfer completed for an A-League Women club-record undisclosed fee.

Worts, 30, will leave Australia on Friday with the sincere thanks and best wishes of everyone at Adelaide United.

The forward departs as one of the most significant players in Club history, sitting equal top of Adelaide United’s all-time leading goalscorers list with 32 goals, having made 73 appearances across two stints in red.

Worts first joined Adelaide United in 2020, bringing with her experience from Leicester City Women Football Club and Coventry United in the FA Women’s Championship, as well as time with Adelaide University in the Women’s NPLSA.

Since arriving at the Club, Worts has made a lasting impact through her goalscoring ability, professionalism, and contribution to the group both on and off the pitch.

Fiona Worts said:

“I’m gutted to be leaving the team at this point in the season, and I’m sorry to anyone who feels let down, but I know opportunities like this do not come around often and this felt like one I had to take.

“I have every confidence the girls will continue to do something special this season, and I will be their biggest fan as they do so.

“I’m so grateful for my time at United over the years. It’s been an incredible adventure and I have some of the most amazing memories that I’ll cherish forever.

“Above all, I’m most grateful for the people – my teammates, the staff, and of course the fans. They are what make this Club so special, and I will miss them greatly.”

Adelaide United Football Director, Mitch van Gellekom, said:

“Fiona has made an outstanding contribution to Adelaide United and leaves as one of the most influential players in our A-League Women history.

“To depart as a joint all-time leading goalscorer and for a club-record fee is a reflection of her quality and character.

“On behalf of everyone at Adelaide United, I’d like to thank Fiona for everything she has given to the Club and wish her every success overseas.”

Adelaide United thanks Fiona for her outstanding service and wishes her all the very best for the next stage of her career.
