Adelaide United can today confirm that Club legends Isaías Sánchez and Javier ‘Javi’ López Rodríguez have officially announced their retirement from professional football, marking the end of an era for two of the most influential and beloved figures in Reds’ history.
The Spanish duo, who combined for nearly 400 appearances for the Club and brought a wealth of experience, professionalism, and passion to Coopers Stadium, will both remain at Adelaide United in coaching capacities, with further details to be announced in the off-season.
Together, Isaías and Javi have become synonymous with the Club’s values leaving an enduring legacy both on and off the pitch.
ISAÍAS – The Midfield Maestro
At 38 years of age, Isaías retires as Adelaide United’s all-time appearance leader with 289 matches across two stints (2013–2019, 2021–2025), scoring 10 goals and lifting every major piece of domestic silverware.
Having arrived in Adelaide in 2013 after a spell with La Liga side RCD Espanyol, Isaías quickly became the engine of the team’s midfield. His technique, intelligence, and ability to control the tempo of a game made him one of the most respected and consistent performers in the Isuzu UTE A-League.
Among his many highlights, Isaías will forever be remembered for his stunning free-kick in the 2016 A-League Grand Final, helping deliver a famous 3-1 win over Western Sydney Wanderers and secure the Club’s first Championship, completing a historic double following the Premiership that same season.

His personal accolades include:
- 289 appearances (most in Club history)
- 10 goals
- A-League Championship (2016)
- A-League Premiership (2015/16)
- Australia Cup (FFA Cup) titles (2014, 2018)
- Aurelio Vidmar Medal winner (2013/14, 2016/17, 2017/18, 2018/19)
Reflecting on his career, Isaías said: “I’m incredibly proud of everything this journey has given me — the places I’ve travelled, the lessons I’ve learned, and the incredible people I’ve met along the way. Football has shaped who I am, and Adelaide United has given me some of the most meaningful moments of my life. This club will always be part of me, and Adelaide is truly my home.
“I want to thank my teammates, coaches, and the staff who work tirelessly behind the scenes — your support has meant so much to me. To the fans, your passion and warmth have created memories I’ll never forget. Every time I stepped onto the pitch, I felt your energy, and it pushed me to give everything I had.
“I’ll carry these experiences with me into the next chapter, and I’m excited to keep contributing to this special club in a new way. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for making this journey so unforgettable,” Isaías concluded.

JAVI LÓPEZ – A Leader and Gentlemen of the Game
At 39 years old, Javi López ends a brilliant career that spanned almost two decades, including the past five seasons with the Reds. Known for his defensive intelligence, calmness under pressure, and exceptional character, Javi departs having made 100 appearances in red and scoring four goals.
Before arriving in Adelaide in 2020, Javi enjoyed a distinguished career at RCD Espanyol, where he amassed 286 appearances and captained the club in Spain’s top flight. Upon his arrival in Australia, he instantly endeared himself to the Reds’ faithful with his professionalism, humility, and team-first mentality.
Over his five seasons at the Club, Javi played a crucial role both on the field and in the dressing room, offering guidance to younger players while forming a key part of the squad’s leadership group. He was also a central figure in building a positive and inclusive culture across the entire Club.
“Adelaide United welcomed me with open arms during one of the most difficult times in my life, and for that, I’ll always be grateful. This club helped me rediscover my love for football and, more importantly, my love for life. From the very beginning, I felt genuine care and support from every corner of the Club — players, coaches, staff, and fans,” Javi said.
“I’ve been lucky to share the pitch with incredible teammates and lifelong friends, and to be part of a culture built on humility, passion, and togetherness. The bonds I’ve made here, both on and off the field, are something I will carry with me forever.
“To the fans, thank you for your warmth, your humour, and your incredible energy — you created the best atmosphere in Australia and made every match at Coopers Stadium feel special.
“Adelaide United is more than a football club — it’s a family. I’m honoured to be continuing this journey in a new role, and I’m excited to help the Club grow from a different perspective. From player to proud Red forever — thank you,” Javi concluded.

Adelaide United Head of Football, Marius Zanin, paid tribute to both Isaías and Javi:
“Javi and Isa have been two of the most respected and influential figures in our Club’s history. Their impact cannot be overstated – they have elevated standards, inspired teammates, and represented Adelaide United with class and distinction.
We’re incredibly fortunate that their journey with the Club will continue in coaching roles, where they will shape the next generation and pass on the values they have embodied throughout their careers.”
While their playing days have drawn to a close, their stories at Adelaide United are far from over. The Club is proud to confirm both Isaías and Javi will remain part of the Reds family as they transition into coaching roles – a fitting next step for two players who have given everything to the shirt.
Gracias, Isaías.
Gracias, Javi.
Legends forever.
