Candid Veart honest with assessment of win

Adelaide United Head Coach, Carl Veart, admitted his side was fortunate to come away with the three points against Brisbane Roar on Saturday night.

Adelaide United Head Coach, Carl Veart, admitted his side was fortunate to come away with the three points against Brisbane Roar on Saturday night.

United needed an 84th minute winner from substitute, Nestory Irankunda, to beat the travelling Roar, who pressured Veart’s side throughout the encounter.

With the referees overruling a second-half goal from Brisbane after Joe Gauci was deemed to have been fouled in the process, Veart was honest in his assessment of the match.

Veart said:
“We rode our luck quite a few times tonight, but the boys kept fighting.

“Brisbane are a very difficult side to play against because they get so many numbers behind the ball and they defend their box so well.

“It wasn’t one of our better performances, but we did enough to get the three points and that’s the main thing.

“Coming into the second part of the season, it’s just about making sure you get your points at home and that’s what we did tonight.

“It was difficult and, at times, we sort of let ourselves down a little bit because we just weren’t patient enough to keep the ball and create openings.

“We just tried to force things or played some long, hopeless balls, which fell into their hands – that’s what they wanted.

“We needed to be patient and keep moving the ball and create our moments and take the moments when the appeared, but we just didn’t have the patience at times to do that.”
