Captain Goodwin Committed To Lifting Standards

Craig Goodwin says he’s proud to once again wear the armband for Adelaide United, as the Club enters a new era ahead of the 2025/26 Isuzu UTE A-League season.

The Reds legend was confirmed as Captain this week by Head Coach Airton Andrioli, returning to the leadership role he held prior to his overseas stint.

Speaking to media, Goodwin addressed the honour of captaining his boyhood club, the development of the squad’s younger leaders, and the need to strengthen ahead of the new campaign.

Goodwin on being named Captain again…
“It’s a great honour and something I don’t take lightly. Growing up a fan of the club, it means a lot to represent the people of this state and lead this group of players.”

On being asked to lead the team by Airton Andrioli…
“He brought me into his office and said what he expects from me going forward, from the leadership group, and from the team overall. It was a simple, clear conversation — and I’m proud to step into that role again.”

On what it means to him personally…
“Representing the players, the Club, and our fans is special. I’m really excited for the challenge ahead and to help drive the standards in this group.”

On returning from injury…
“I’m probably another week away from full training. I’ve started integrating with the group again and everything’s gone well. With a long pre-season ahead, we can afford to build up slowly and make sure it’s right.”

On the evolving leadership group…
“Bringing in Ethan [Alagich] and Pana [Kikianis] is really exciting. They’re young, but they’ve got the right personalities and apply themselves the right way. They’re already leaders in their own way.”

On helping younger leaders develop…
“Maybe I see a bit of myself in Ala [Alagich] – quiet in a group setting but driven. I think having more responsibility will push them further and that’s a great thing.”

On the squad’s youth and the need to recruit…
“It’s a very young group now, especially after losing Zach [Clough] and Stef [Mauk]. That creates a gap. There’s a definite need to strengthen, and I believe the Club will be active in the market.”

On conversations around replacing key players…
“We’ve had leadership meetings, and that’s been a key point – making sure we replace players like Zach and Stef. You can’t expect players with 5-10 games to suddenly deliver 10-20 goals. Recruitment is essential.”

On fan concern after recent departures…
“I understand the frustration, especially when senior players leave. But I believe in the group we have, and I believe the Club will act. We still have the core of the squad that was top two for most of last season.”

On what fans can expect in 2025/26…
“With the right mentality, I think we can challenge again. It’s about consistency and finding that edge every day in training. That’s what I’m here to drive.”

On rekindling his partnership with Ryan Kitto…
“Kitto is someone this team looks up to. We’ve played our best football together, and his leadership is huge. I’m looking forward to sharing the field with him again.”

On Isaías transitioning into coaching…
“It’s a little different seeing him in that role, but he’s the perfect person for it. He’s got white line fever and his expectations are as high as ever. He demands a lot — and that’s a good thing.”
