Adelaide United’s Liberty A-League side may not have had a win on Saturday but a new record was set following the debut of new signing Miley Grigg.
Grigg – a Gawler local and MetroStars junior – was only signed to a youth development contract last Thursday and came straight into coach Adrian Stenta’s squad for the weekend’s game against Western United.
Aged just 15 years and 54 days old, Grigg became Adelaide United’s youngest ever player – male or female – when she came on in the 65th minute.
Interestingly, the player who previously held the record, teammate Emily Condon, also came on off the substitute bench a few minutes earlier.
Condon was 15 years and 126 days when she made her debut in a two-nil win over Canberra United on the 5th of January 2014.
Grigg was the seventh 15-year-old to play for the Reds’ ALW side along with Condon, Georgia Iannella, Ebony Philcox, Emma Checker, Alex Chidiac and Jessica Waterhouse.
Condon holds the record as being Adelaide United’s youngest ALW goal scorer, when she scored aged 15 years and 132 days, just six days after her debut.
On the men’s side, Teeboy Kamara was Adelaide United’s youngest ALM player, debuting at 15 years and 212 days – making him the youngest ever male player for any team in the A-League.
Mohamed Toure is the club’s youngest male scorer, with his first goal coming when he was aged 15 years and 325 days in a two-nil win over Central Coast on the 14th of February 2020. Like Condon’s, his goal came six days after his A-League debut.
While Grigg is definitely young, she is not the youngest A-League player ever. That record goes to Ischia Brooking who debuted last month at the tender age of just 14 years and 347 days – pinching the record set a fortnight earlier by Western Sydney teammate Talia Younis by 13 days.
