Adelaide United Ninja A-League head coach Theo Tsiounis says the Reds’ response to last week’s draw with Melbourne City has underlined the belief and standards within the squad, as attention shifts quickly to another demanding away test against Canberra United today.
With a tight turnaround and three matches in a week, Tsiounis believes the group’s depth, resilience and commitment to its identity will be crucial in a match-up he expects to be a “strong challenge.”
Tsiounis on reflections from the Melbourne City match
“It was a tough game played in difficult conditions. In the end, a draw was probably a fair result, although we did create some good opportunities to win it. More importantly, it highlights our growth and how far we’ve come as a group this season especially given it’s the first time we’ve gone through a season without losing to Melbourne City.”
Tsiounis on the mood after the draw and the group’s standards
“There was definitely some disappointment, and that reflects the belief and standards within the group. It speaks to the culture we’ve built. We believe in what we’re doing and will continue to push forward.”
Tsiounis on managing a short turnaround and two away games
“Playing three games in a week is always challenging, but we have the depth and quality within the squad to rotate when needed. It also creates opportunities for others to step in and contribute.”
Tsiounis on the Fiona Worts departure and opportunities for others
“We’re always guided by our key outcomes including, creating a high-performance learning environment and providing clear pathways for players. We want to be a club of choice for emerging talent. If we continue to deliver in those areas, opportunities will naturally open up and players will continue to progress.”
Tsiounis on what Canberra will bring
“Canberra are a very aggressive and consistent team. They deserve to be where they are on the table and have shown their quality throughout the season. We know it will be a strong challenge.”
Tsiounis on squad health
“There are a few minor niggles, which is expected at this stage of the season, but overall the squad is in a good place and ready for the next challenge.”
