Izzy’s Index: 2023 can be year of consistency

Isabel Hodgson is back for Izzy's Index ahead of Round9 against Canberra United.

2023 represents a fresh opportunity for us and we’re eager to swiftly make amends after ending 2022 with the loss to Newcastle.

We can still take a lot of positives from the game against the Jets, as I thought we controlled the tempo and possession throughout, but football often hurts when you don’t capitalise on your dominance.

We’ve be working even harder on the track this week to stamp that out.

In great signs for the squad, it was nice to see Emily Hodgson have a full, solid game under her belt in defence after an unlucky start to the season with illness.

She played a great game and it’s awesome to see her hit her straps after a challenging start, and it does wonders for our depth.

We need to move on, rally the troops, and prepare to host Canberra United at Gepps Cross on Saturday before we play Melbourne City at the same ground mid-week.

Gepps is becoming more and more of a home ground for us and we want to make it a fortress.

Canberra is always a tough game for us no matter how our seasons are going – it boils down to the performance on the day.

It’s hugely important for us to have a good home ground and great support behind us.

Despite the loss it was still lovely to spend New Year’s Eve together as a team and we had a good meal afterwards to digest a disappointing result.

These sort of activities builds comradery and I’m confident we can keep the closeness of the group together which can certainly contribute to a more consistent 2023.

A New Year’s resolution for me, and for sure possible if we play at our best, is to go through the rest of the season undefeated.

We haven’t really conceded many goals overall, so I really want to make this a realistic mission for us.

It will take focus and commitment, and it starts with Canberra on Saturday.
