Adelaide United’s new signing, Joshua Smits, has arrived in Adelaide ahead of the 2025/26 Isuzu UTE A-League season, joining the Reds after signing a two-year deal.
The 32-year-old shot-stopper, who has spent his career across the Netherlands and Norway, spoke to media for the first time since touching down, sharing his first impressions of Adelaide, and his excitement at working with the Club’s younger goalkeepers.
Smits on his first impressions of Adelaide and Coopers Stadium…
“My first impression of the stadium was fantastic – it looks like a proper football ground. The city too, I really like it. I’ll have plenty of time to explore more, but the first impression is very positive.”
On why he chose Adelaide United…
“At this point in my career, I was looking for the next step. I thought moving outside the Netherlands was a good step, and then I got in contact with Ernest, who I knew from earlier in my career at NEC Nijmegen. After talking with my family, we felt this was a fantastic opportunity – for me personally, it’s a great move.”
On what he knew about Australian football…
“I played with Stefan Mauk, who always spoke highly about Adelaide and life here, and also with Brad Jones who shared great stories about Australian football. So I knew a little, and always positive things.”
On first impressions of his new teammates…
“I’ve only met them briefly, but it’s a good group. Very young, but I think that’s exciting. I’ve played in similar squads before, with young players and experienced players working together, and I enjoy that.”
On his personality and leadership style…
“I’m not a quiet person. I like to talk, on the pitch and off it. That’s part of being a goalkeeper, but also part of being a teammate. I think it’s important.”
On joining a young squad under a new coach…
“It’s a great opportunity. Young players are eager and quick to learn, and if you bring in some experienced players alongside them, you can build something strong together. It’s not new for me, I had the same last season, so I’m comfortable in that situation.”
On mentoring United’s young goalkeepers…
“Yes, of course. I have more experience, and I’m happy to share that with them. Even the small details can make a difference. If I can help them become better goalkeepers, I will.”
