Adelaide United is thrilled to announce the re-signing of 21-year-old South Australian defender Ella Tonkin to a one-year contract, with an option for a second year.
Ella has been a vital part of the squad since joining the Club in 2019 from the Football SA NTC program, making 37 appearances and scoring one goal during her time with the Reds.
Her outstanding performances in the 2024 season earned her the Young Player of the Year award at the Alagich Vidmar Awards night.
Ella began her football journey with Adelaide Croatia Raiders before moving in to the FSA NTC program. She also played interstate for the Northern Tigers in NSW. She has consistently demonstrated dedication and skill on the pitch, earning this opportunity to continue her professional career with Adelaide United—a Club deeply committed to nurturing homegrown talent.
Reflecting on her new contract, Ella said, “It’s an honour to continue my journey with Adelaide United. Growing up in Adelaide, it’s always been a dream to play for the Reds, and I’m grateful for the faith the Club has shown in me.”
“One of my biggest inspirations has been Charli Grant; growing up playing with her in Adelaide and seeing what she has achieved in football inspires me to reach my full potential,” Ella concluded.
Ella is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Business degree, balancing her academic aspirations with her football career. Her dedication on and off the pitch exemplifies the well-rounded athletes Adelaide United seeks to develop.
Marius Zanin, Head of Football at Adelaide United, expressed his confidence in Ella’s future:
“We are delighted to have Ella continue with us,” said Zanin.
“She represents the kind of young South Australian talent we are committed to developing.
“Ella has shown tremendous growth during her time here, and we are dedicated to supporting her in achieving her goals, both on the pitch and in her academic pursuits.
“We believe in providing a platform for our players to succeed and thrive in all aspects of their lives.”
Ella’s signing reinforces Adelaide United’s ongoing commitment to fostering local talent and providing young players with the tools and opportunities they need to succeed.
The Club is excited to see what the future holds for Ella as she continues to grow and develop in the upcoming season.
