Lucía León may have started her career in the bustling football hubs of London and Madrid, but it’s in Adelaide—thousands of kilometres from home—where she’s truly found her footballing happiness.
The 27-year-old Dominican Republic international scored twice in Adelaide United’s impressive 3-1 win over Western United on Saturday, stepping up in attack when her team needed it most.
“We were missing a couple of our strikers and I’m just happy I could help out,” León said with a smile. “I kept running and the ball landed in the perfect spot.”
It was a performance full of energy, intelligence and instinct—and one that typified what she’s brought to the Reds since arriving at the beginning of the season.
“Lucía has been absolutely fantastic for us this season, no matter what role we ask of her each week,” Head Coach Adrian Stenta said. “She plays with a smile on her face, which I love, and knows she has the freedom to be creative out on the field. She brings so much joy to our group.”
That joy has been mutual. After stints with Tottenham Hotspur, Madrid CFF, Real Betis, and Watford, León’s first Ninja A-League Women campaign has given her something fresh—freedom and fun.
“I’ve honestly enjoyed football so much here,” she said. “The league, the travel, the people—it’s all been amazing. I’ve had a lot of fun, and I think that’s why I’ve been able to do well. I’ve just loved it.”
She credits that to the culture around the Club and the warm welcome from teammates and staff alike.
“I have a really good relationship with all the girls and with Adrian,” she said. “He’s not just a good coach, he’s a great person.”
That bond was clear after her substitution in Saturday’s match. León jogged to the sidelines, going in for a handshake with Stenta, only for him to pull back, explaining he wasn’t feeling well.
“I just said, ‘I don’t care!’ and gave him a hug anyway,” she laughed.
With one game left before finals, León isn’t looking too far ahead—despite questions about her future.
“I’m just enjoying the moment, week by week,” she said. “We’ve got Sydney at home next, then our first final at Coopers. I’m focused on that.”
Whatever comes next, one thing’s certain: Lucía León has made her mark in Adelaide—and Adelaide has made its mark on her.
