Adelaide United midfielder Juan Muñiz says he is growing in confidence each week and believes there is “much more to come” as he prepares for his first-ever Original Rivalry match against Melbourne Victory this Saturday at AAMI Park.
The Spaniard has quickly become an influential figure in the Reds’ midfield since arriving from Malaysia in the off-season, and is now determined to add more attacking threat to his game.
Reflecting on the recent performance against Brisbane, Muñiz felt the team deserved more from the match.
“I think we didn’t deserve that loss,” he said. “Especially in the first half, we controlled the game and had a few chances. In the final third we didn’t have the precision to materialise the chances we had, and in the end we were a bit disappointed. At least one point would have been fair.”
Despite that frustration, Muñiz said the focus shifted immediately to the next challenge – and there is no bigger stage than the Derby.
“We need to bounce back after these two losses,” he said. “We go for the game with the mentality of getting the three points. It will be a tough game, but we go there to win.”
Muñiz has been studying his own performances closely since joining the club, determined to elevate his attacking output.
“I try to see the videos after the games. I think I can reach the area more and be in better positions closer to goal,” he said. “Every player has things to improve, and for me that is one of them. I need to work on that to improve in the next game.”
Away from the pitch, Muñiz says settling into life in South Australia has made the transition smooth and enjoyable.
“We are happy – especially my kids,” he smiled. “They love the city, they love the lifestyle here. My wife too. I’m very happy with the club, with the teammates, the atmosphere. Everything has been very good.”
Though new to the rivalry, Muñiz understands exactly what this fixture means to the Adelaide supporters.
“I know how important it is to get the three points,” he said. “The rivalry is big. For the fans, for the club – we know what it means.”
With the Reds hungry to respond after consecutive defeats, and Muñiz aiming to continue his upward trajectory, Saturday night’s clash promises a fierce and defining chapter in his early Adelaide United journey.
