Adelaide United is delighted to announce the signing of experienced Spanish defender, Javi López, for the A-League 2020/21 season.
The 34-year-old boasts an impressive pedigree having spent the last 11 years in La Liga with RCD Espanyol, accumulating a total of 286 appearances in all competitions.
López served as captain of Los Periquitos for the last five years of his tenure and also played under the likes of Mauricio Pochettino and Quique Sánchez Flores.
Although, he has spent the majority of his career at right-back, López can also comfortably operate as a centre-back or as a defensive midfielder.
The versatile footballer will join the side in the coming weeks after his arrival and mandatory 14-day quarantine in Adelaide.
López, who becomes the sixth Spaniard to play for the Reds, said: “I’m very happy to be moving to Adelaide with my family.
“It’s a new adventure for me and my family and I’m looking forward to meeting my new teammates and the challenge of playing in Australia.
“I have heard many great things about the city and the culture of the A-League from my friend, Isaías Sánchez, and I cannot wait to begin this journey.”
Adelaide United Director of Football, Bruce Djite, said: “Javi’s career speaks for itself, having spent more than a decade in Spain’s top-flight.
“We have been acutely aware of the need to bring in a few more experienced players and it has always been our intention to bring in more experienced players to complement our younger players.
“When it comes to football pedigree and experience, Javi will comfortably be the most experienced player in our squad.
“He’s a tremendous professional who is versatile and can fill a number of different defensive roles for us.
“We are eagerly anticipating Javi’s arrival in the upcoming weeks once he completes his required quarantine.”
