Adelaide United forward Fiona Worts is hitting form at the right time, and she’s ready to lead the charge as the Reds prepare for their second-ever Finals appearance.
Fresh off a sensational brace against her former side Sydney FC, Fiona Worts is no stranger to the big moments — and with 11 goals to her name this campaign, she’s once again cemented herself in Adelaide United folklore.
Now a two-time Golden Boot winner for the club, Worts is laser-focused as she prepares for Sunday’s Finals clash, believing the squad’s resilience and momentum could carry them to something special.
“This is kind of why you play,” Worts said. “Everyone enjoys the journey, the ups and the downs, but this is where you get your real rewards — in the big games, with chances to win trophies.”
It’s been a season of revival for the Reds, rising from the bottom of the ladder last year to the cusp of history this time around. Worts credits that turnaround to belief within the group from the outset of pre-season.
“When you saw the talent around you at training, there was a real excitement that this could be a good year,” she said. “We didn’t go into it expecting Finals, but we believed we could win games — and we just kept building.”
Her brace against Sydney last weekend was her fourth of the season — a clinical statement of form at the right time — and made her the first player in club history to record two double-figure goal seasons. It’s that killer instinct Worts will be looking to carry into Sunday’s do-or-die fixture.
Despite the pressure of an elimination final, Worts is keeping things grounded.
“At the moment it feels like another game,” she said. “But when you’re out on the pitch, especially in those final minutes, that’s when you feel what’s really at stake.”
The spotlight is now well and truly on the Adelaide United women — and Worts says the squad is ready to embrace it.
“We love being out at Coopers. It’s a big game for us and a chance to make more history for the women’s side,” she said. “It’s an exciting time for the club, and we’d love a big crowd to get behind us.”
And with a positive head-to-head record against their Finals opponents, there’s no shortage of confidence in the camp.
“We haven’t lost to them this season — we’ve drawn and we’ve won,” she said. “So we know we’ve done it before, and we can do it again. There’s belief we haven’t even played our best football yet.”
For Worts, it’s about peaking when it matters most. And with the Reds carrying momentum, belief, and a striker in red-hot form — anything feels possible.
