Adelaide United Head Coach Theo Tsiounis says his side is ready to respond as they prepare for Saturday’s away clash with Melbourne Victory, describing the match as “a great opportunity to bounce back” after last week’s defeat to Brisbane Roar.
The Reds returned from the three-week league pause lacking their usual spark, but Tsiounis believes the lessons learned – and the team’s mindset – will hold them in good stead heading into a rivalry fixture.
Tsiounis on rebounding after Brisbane…
“I think it provides a great opportunity to bounce back. Last week was disappointing in terms of energy, and the girls reflected on that. We’re ready to respond. The three-week layoff didn’t help us – that was a big factor – but we’ll look at that moving forward if we’re in a similar situation again.”
Tsiounis on recent performances…
“We gained momentum from our start. Central Coast, Sydney, Canberra – there were positive patches we want to keep consistent and extend. There were passages last week that were promising, but we conceded in moments that really hurt us. At 2–1 we were finding our way back, but then a transition goal changed it. The girls have an open mindset, they want to improve and learn, and our focus is always process – process provides the outcomes.”
Tsiounis on the rivalry with Victory…
“Yeah, I think it’s a healthy little rivalry. The girls are super excited to go across, and I’m sure Victory are as well. They’ve got quality players, they’ve been consistent for years under Jeff. It’ll be a tough game, but every game is winnable – that’s our approach.”
Tsiounis on squad news…
“Laura Gooch has come off modified and she’ll be available, which is exciting – she’s got huge potential, super quick and powerful. Dylan has a fracture and she’s working through that. Hopefully we see her before the end of the year, if not early next year.”
Tsiounis on his side’s progression…
“It’s somewhat of a transition phase. They’ve had a consistent environment for years, and Stenta did an amazing job with them. I’m trying to bring some minor changes, and it will take time before we get to where we need to be. But I keep seeing positive signs. We want to extend those moments, be comfortable on the ball, and we won’t move away from that style because long-term it will benefit the girls and the club. Short-term it may cost us, but long-term I’m confident it puts the team where it needs to be.”
