Head Coach Theo Tsiounis says Adelaide United’s focus has quickly shifted to Newcastle Jets, as the side looks to back up an emotional Original Rivalry victory with another strong performance tonight.
Speaking ahead of the match, Tsiounis provided updates on squad health, workload management, and the challenges that lie ahead in a demanding stretch of fixtures.
Tsiounis on the group’s recovery after the Original Rivalry win…
“It was a great night for everyone connected with the club, particularly given the significance of the result against Melbourne Victory, who we last beat in 2022. We allowed ourselves a short period to enjoy the win before quickly shifting our focus to Newcastle. Recovery has been managed well and the group is mentally prepared for the next challenge.”
Tsiounis on the injury status of Dylan Holmes and Lara Gooch…
“Dylan is making strong progress and has now fully integrated back into squad training. She is in contention for selection in upcoming matches. Unfortunately, Lara has sustained an ankle injury at training, which will rule her out for a few weeks.”
Tsiounis on the challenge Newcastle Jets present tonight…
“We are expecting a tough contest tonight. Newcastle have a number of experienced players across the pitch and have been in good form recently, picking up strong results, including against Melbourne City. Their ability to transition quickly will be an important challenge for us.”
Tsiounis on maintaining momentum after a big result…
“It is important that we continue to build on the work we have been doing. There has been a strong investment in establishing a solid foundation and a learning environment within the group. Our focus is on consistently applying our principles and being decisive in key moments.”
Tsiounis on managing a demanding week with Wellington to follow…
“It is a demanding period with a short turnaround between matches. From the outset, we have emphasised that everyone contributes to a season in different ways, whether that is on the pitch, at training, or through their influence around the group. Players will all have opportunities to contribute.”
Tsiounis on continuing to build the club’s identity…
“We want to continue developing our identity and bringing value every time we step onto the field. We also have a number of emerging players who we are looking to integrate gradually into the team. Ilona is a great example of that pathway.”
