Adelaide United Head Coach Theo Tsiounis says his side will take plenty of positives from Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Sydney FC at ServiceFM Stadium, highlighting the team’s continued growth, tactical flexibility, and belief in their identity.
The Reds earned their first point of the season against Sydney FC, with strong defensive organisation and glimpses of attacking cohesion pleasing the new Head Coach.
Tsiounis on taking positives from the draw…
“We always reference our processes – whether we have a good performance or a poor one, we get back to our identity. That ensures we stay on track and make the right adjustments when needed. The girls have been fantastic, bringing energy and belief into what we’re doing.”
Tsiounis on changes to the starting XI…
“We wanted to swing into a back three in possession, and Holly [Murray] has the ability to find those nice passes in between the lines. Tonks [Ella Tonkin] is strong on the left, and that helped nullify Sydney’s right-hand side, which was one of their strengths.
“Carina [Rossi] came in up top and had an amazing game – great energy on and off the ball, and she was a real handful for Sydney.”
Tsiounis on the style of play and the nature of the match…
“It was a cagey game, very physical, and ServiceFM is a bit tighter than some other pitches, which makes contests more frequent. But we won’t veer away from our processes – we’ll continue to execute our game model and improve each week.”
Tsiounis on the return of Dawber and Worts…
“Yes, that was a managed decision. They’re increasing their loads and minutes after injury. It’s great to have them back – they offer something different in the final third, and between them, they’ve scored plenty of goals. We’ll build them up and hopefully see them on the field longer in the coming weeks.”
Tsiounis on Izzy Hodgson injury update…
“Isabel [Hodgson] came off with a knock to her knee – we’ll know more soon, but at this stage, it looks minor.”
Tsiounis on the next few weeks…
“Canberra at home will be another tough match, but it’s an opportunity to be even better and keep pushing boundaries. Then we’ll use the international break to refine our play, improve key areas, and bring our game model to life.”
Tsiounis on the home support…
“Nothing beats playing at home. The crowd were amazing – when they’re vocal, it really gives the players a lift. We definitely need that support for the rest of the season, and we hope even more people get behind the girls.”
