Veart: “That sums us up over five years”

Carl Veart spoke to the media following Adelaide United’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Wellington Phoenix on Good Friday at Coopers Stadium.

The Reds kept their Finals hopes alive thanks to a stoppage-time winner from Archie Goodwin. The result lifts United to within striking distance of sixth place with two crucial games remaining.

Veart on a dramatic home win…
“I’m sitting here relieved that we won the game tonight. We started so well, scored two good goals and could’ve had more. Then we gave away some fairly soft goals and made it hard for ourselves. But we got the three points, and that’s what we needed tonight.”

Veart on the late winner…
“It’s always good winning at home. We haven’t been as strong here this year, so it was nice to finish our home campaign with a win. We’ve conceded a lot of late goals this season, so to score one felt good. Full credit to the players for keeping at it.”

Veart on Archie Goodwin’s impact…
“Yaya always provides a spark, and we needed a strong start tonight, so we rolled the dice with him. He was excellent early on and got the goal. It’s about building that consistency for longer periods, and that’s something he’s working on.”

Veart on defensive lapses…
“When we’re on the front foot and playing quickly, we’re a very good side. But when we switch off, we’re vulnerable. It’s been a recurring problem. We’ve conceded too many soft goals—not from being opened up, but from our own mistakes.”

Veart on fan support and possible farewell…
“I always try to do my best for the club and the fans. The support tonight was special. I heard the Red Army’s banner and saw the ovation—I’m grateful for that. But the job’s not done yet. We’ve got two more games and we’re still in the hunt.”

Veart on what’s next…
“We’re in a bit of a shootout with Sydney for that final spot. All we can do is focus on ourselves. Two games to go, short turnarounds. Hopefully the win tonight gives us a confidence boost heading into Brisbane and then City.”
