Ahead of Saturday’s Ninja A-League Women’s Round One opener against number one rivals, Melbourne Victory, returning 2021/22 Julie Dolan Medallist and Golden Boot winner, Fiona Worts spoke with Adelaide United Media about the side’s goals for the upcoming season.
Worts on facing our biggest rivals in Round One…
“It’s amazing to have a home game first up to drum up some support from our fans and hopefully give us a bit of an advantage going into the opener. It’s a big game, but why not kick-off with a big one?!”
Fiona on replicating her previous hattrick during Adelaide United’s previous win against Melbourne Victory…
“I’m always hoping to do my best and score a couple of goals but first and foremost I’m looking towards the team’s achievements and hopefully we come away with the points.”
Worts on the Red’s new look side for the 2024/25 season including the additions of international signings Lucía León, Abbey Clark, and Erin Healy…
“On a personal level, they are great personalities, which has always been a really important thing. They’ve slotted in so well both on and off the pitch. They’re really great players and I think they’re going to be a massive strength for our team this year. I’m really excited to get out on the pitch with them.”
Fiona on the vibe surrounding the squad prior to the season opener…
“I would say there is a really positive feeling amongst the team and everyone is just enjoying being out here. There’s some new faces and they’ve slotted in really nicely. Vibes are high and we’ve had some good pre-season games and training has been positive. I think everyone’s just excited to get going now.”
Worts on positive pre-season results, including defeating Western United in Mildura…
“I think it’s the first time in a long time that we have been able to play another A-League team in preseason, so to have the opportunity to do that and then to also win the game is a massive boost for us heading into the season.”
Fiona on returning to her previous golden-boot form…
“My aim is to keep pushing to get there. Obviously, the last couple of years haven’t been great for me coming back off injury. It would be optimistic of me to try and say that I’m going to come up with the Golden Boot. I just go out every game and put my best foot forward and hopefully keep building on that and we’ll see where we end up at the end of the season.”
