Flinders creating a more inclusive environment

Flinders University has been on the front foot when it comes to creating a more inclusive environment for the LGBTQIA+ community, developing a range of initiatives to help foster equality.

So it was appropriate they were immediately on board supporting Adelaide United’s Pride Game and becoming a major event partner at Coopers Stadium on Saturday.

The inaugural Pride Game in the A-Leagues will see our women’s side kick-off proceedings against Melbourne Victory before the men’s team tackle Central Coast Mariners, in what is anticipated to be an exciting double header.

Flinders University is implementing a range of measures to promote inclusivity and equality, helping create a safer society.

Flinders is relaunching its Ally initiative as the Pride Network in 2022, to continue enhancing the culture on its campuses and build a more welcoming environment for members of the LGBTQIA+ community.

The main function of the Pride Network will be to ensure that Flinders University is a safe, inclusive and supportive space for members of the LGBTQIA+ community, by proactively dealing with prejudicial behaviours and language.

There are currently more than 50 staff and students Pride Network members visible on the Flinders website, who act as a contact point for fellow staff and students in a confidential setting.

Pride Network members are well-informed – having completed relevant training – and possess a strong understanding of LGBTQIA+ matters. They are adept in discussing a variety of LGBTQIA+ issues from curriculum, essays, support, resources to coming out.

Flinders University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Colin Stirling (he/him), said he was more than delighted to support the Club’s Pride Game.

“When the opportunity arose to become a major event partner for the day it was an obvious decision,” Mr. Stirling said.

“Our values align with those of Adelaide United and we want to play our part in helping raise the profile of the day and build awareness for the LGBTQIA+ community.

“Unfortunately, research shows discrimination remains a major obstacle to participation for members of the LGBTQIA+ population, and it is something that must change.”

The University has also instigated other significant initiatives to further demonstrate its commitment to supporting the LGBTQIA+ community.

In October 2021, to coincide with LGBTI+ History Month, Flinders raised the pride flag alongside its other flags on campus.

Additionally, the stairs near the Library at Bedford Park were painted in the Pride colours as a visible commitment to promoting gender diversity and acceptance in the community.

Specially designed Flinders Pride face masks are also available to buy at the Flinders Shop with money raised from sales donated to Flinders Pride Network.
