In the past, a quality goalkeeper was largely taken for granted and still to this day they are often considered the unsung heroes, going unnoticed in many title winning sides.
We expect them to perform consistently when called into action and we berate them when they make a blunder.
Sadly for most goalkeepers, there’s a tendency for them to be remembered for the latter instead of their brilliance. It is a position underrated, highlighted by the fact only one custodian has claimed the Ballon d’Or – the revolutionary Lev Yashin way back in 1963.
But as the proverbial adage goes: strikers win matches, but defenders (including the goalkeeper) win championships. Just think about it, any great side requires a solid foundation starting with an apt gloveman.
And fortunately for the best part of nine years, Adelaide United supporters have had the pleasure of witnessing arguably the greatest Hyundai A-League goalkeeper of all time.
For a Club that has experienced the highs and lows of professional football throughout the Hyundai A-League’s existence, and the numerous personnel changes which are part and parcel of the world game, one man has remained constant – Eugene Galekovic.
