Adelaide United’s Australia Cup 2022 campaign begins this Saturday night against fellow Isuzu UTE A-League side, Newcastle Jets at McDonald Jones Stadium.
The Reds remain the most successful side in the competition, lifting the trophy a record three times in 2014, 2018 and 2019 and Carl Veart and his charges will be determined to claim the prize again.
Only once has United been unable to advance to the Round of 16. That was the shock elimination at the hands of Queensland outfit, Redlands United in 2016.
Saturday’s clash against the Novocastrians is not the first encounter in the tournament between the two sides, with Adelaide prevailing 1-0 on each occasion firstly in 2017 and then two years later.
Here’s a recap of our previous Cup meetings against the Jets as we look to maintain our impeccable record against them.
Australia Cup 2017 – Round of 32
It was an evenly fought contest against Newcastle at Marden Sports Complex back in 2017, in what was Marco Kurz’s first official match in charge as then Head Coach. With the score deadlocked for an hour, an unlikely goal-scorer proved the difference-maker.
In the 63rd minute Michael Marrone forcefully headed home Johan Absalonsen’s corner. From there United managed proceedings in a professional manner as they held on for the narrow victory to progress to the last 16.
Australia Cup 2019 – Quarter Final
Coopers Stadium was the venue for Adelaide’s Quarter Final versus the Jets with almost 5,000 fans in attendance. The Reds had dominated the opening exchanges and would gain a numerical advantage after 11 minutes following goalkeeper Lewis Italiano’s dismissal.
Glen Moss was summoned into the action but three minutes before half-time and would make a meal of Ryan Kitto’s shot, allowing the opportunistic Al Hassan Toure to pounce and continue his goal-scoring Cup form. United failed to add to their lead in the second stanza but it did not matter as they booked a spot in the Semi-finals for a fourth time.
