Adelaide United finished off their season with a 2-1 win over rivals, Melbourne Victory at Marden Sports Complex on Friday night.
Ivan Karlovic fielded an identical starting XI to last week, in a bid to showcase their recent footballing abilities, with the key being to execute in front of goal.
Makenzy Doniak’s opener solidified her goal-scoring dominance for the club, with a clinical finish for her seventh of the season after Alex Chidiac’s probing through ball.
Doniak, Alyssa Mautz and Chidiac bossed the possession, with the majority of play in the first half in Adelaide’s attacking third.
It was all Adelaide before Kyra Cooney-Cross levelled proceedings despite Willacy’s to deny several efforts after a goal-mouth scramble at the fringe of half-time.
The second-half lifted the intensity with end-to-end action, with Alyssa Mautz volleying over the crossbar from close range following Katie Naughton’s perfectly weighted cross.
In the end it was Jenna McCormick who ultimately scored the winner with a tap-in from a goal-mouth scramble.
The Reds would hold on to soak up the Victory pressure sealing all three points in an epic encounter.
Key moments:
6’ | Chidiac has a one-on-one chance, but the angle is too tight and Casey Dumont is able to save.
16’ | GOAL! Doniak opens the scoring as she splits the defence and calmly slots home.
40’ | GOAL: Willacy pulls off several saves but Cooney-Cross capitalises on a loose ball and buries the equaliser.
47’ | Katie Naughton plays in a beautifully-weighted cross for Mautz, who volleys over the crossbar from close-range.
57’ | GOAL! McCormick restores Adelaide’s lead tapping into an open goal following Mautz’ strike goal-ward.
83’ | CHANCE! Chidiac strikes across goal in a tantalising effort to double the Reds’ lead.
