Adelaide United will be returning to where it all started in the Westfield FFA Cup for their opening round of 32 match against the Newcastle Jets at Marden Sports Complex.

The Reds’ inaugural match in the knockout competition took place at Marden in August 2014, beating the Wellington Phoenix 1-0.

In fact throughout United’s existence, Adelaide boast a strong record at the venue in pre-season friendlies as well – recording four wins and a draw.

However, for that last 32 clash against the Phoenix, Adelaide were without then Head Coach, Josep Gombau, and a host of first-team regulars due to injury and Foxtel A-League All-Stars commitments.

As a result several youngsters were entrusted to fill the voids left by Eugene Galekovic, Marcelo Carrusca and Fabio Ferreira.

But a 32nd minute strike from Sergio Cirio proved decisive, as he was quickest to react to Awer Mabil’s deflected cross.

Gloveman Paul Izzo also pulled-off a number of solid saves to preserve Adelaide’s slender advantage and seal the Club’s progression to the round of 16.

United will be looking for a similar result against the Jets and maintain their 100 per cent record at Marden in meaningful matches, in what will be Marco Kurz’s first competitive game in charge of the Reds.

Adelaide United host Newcastle Jets in the Round of 32 of the 2017 Westfield FFA Cup on Wednesday, 9 August at Marden Sports Complex. Kick-off is at 7.00pm ACST.
