Adelaide United is delighted to announce Mark Milligan has been appointed as the Club’s new Assistant Coach for the next two Isuzu UTE A-League seasons.
Milligan enjoyed a successful playing career which spanned almost two decades before retiring last year and will now join the Reds’ backroom staff, working closely alongside Head Coach, Carl Veart, in a full-time capacity.
One of Australia’s most decorated footballers in the modern era, Milligan recorded 80 caps for the Socceroos, went to four FIFA World Cup™ tournaments, won the 2015 AFC Asian Cup, and later captained his country.
A versatile defender and midfielder during his playing days, the 36-year-old ventured into coaching following his retirement. He experienced a stint at Macarthur FC and was most recently in charge of St George FC in Football NSW League One.
Milligan, who lifted silverware at Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory, also spent a large portion of his career abroad in Asia, the Middle East, and the United Kingdom.
Speaking about his decision to join Adelaide United, Milligan, said: “I’ve been a big admirer of what Adelaide United has been building, particularly since Carl has been at the helm.
“From the outside looking in, there seems to be a real togetherness within the squad and I’m looking forward to helping Carl and the other coaches develop this team and get them to the next level.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for me to learn, but to also pass on some of my knowledge and experience to the next generation of Australian footballers, in particular.
“I’m excited for this new challenge and I can’t wait to get to work in Adelaide.”
Veart said: “We’re delighted to have someone of Mark’s pedigree join our Club.
“When it became apparent that Mark remained interested in coaching at this level, I was certain he would be a great fit for us.
“And, after discussions with him, I quickly realised he was the best candidate for the role as he shares a similar footballing philosophy to myself and that’s very important.
“Given Mark was a terrific player in his own right, he will be able to offer his experience and wisdom to our younger players as well, which we see as being invaluable.”
