Craig Goodwin converted the third penalty in Australia’s 5-4 penalty shootout win over Peru in Qatar on Tuesday morning to punch its ticket to the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Goodwin was introduced into the action in the dying minutes of extra-time with the score in the Inter-confederation play-off deadlocked at 0-0 and destined for penalties.
And on his 10th cap for the Socceroos, the 30-year-old emphatically dispatched his spot-kick.
Goodwin showed nerves of steel as he confidently blasted his effort into the roof of the net, leaving Peru goalkeeper Pedro Gallese with no chance.
Ajdin Hrustic, Jamie Maclaren and former Red Awer Mabil slotted the next three penalties before Andrew Redmayne saved Alex Valera’s attempt from 12 yards.
Absolute scenes of jubilation followed as the Aussies secured their fifth straight appearance at the world’s biggest sporting event and will be in Group D alongside France, Tunisia and Denmark.
