BLUFFERS GUIDE
Reputations, bragging rights and perhaps even livelihoods will be on the line this Sunday when Adelaide United and Perth Glory shape up in a bomb-shelter battle between two proud clubs who are both currently on their knees.
These two teams, who just 12 months ago fought out the FFA Cup final, share a solitary win from a combined 15 clashes this season – and that was Perth beating United at home five weeks ago.
The Reds have yet to register a single victory from eight starts under besieged first-year coach Guillermo Amor and the natives are getting mighty restless.
Out west, Glory aren’t faring much better.
After spending almost two-thirds of last season on top of the A-League ladder, Perth were unceremoniously turfed out of the finals race for salary cap violations and have never really recovered.
Last Friday’s 5-1 shellacking against Melbourne City did coach Kenny Lowe no favours and was far from the ideal way to lead into Glory’s 20-year anniversary celebrations.
OPTA DATA
- Adelaide United are unbeaten in five A-League home matches against the Glory (W3 D2).
- Perth have only beaten Adelaide once in the last 10 A-League matches (D5 L4), however, they did beat them in the most recent league fixture (Perth 3-1 Adelaide).
- Nebojsa Marinkovic has scored in two of his last three A-League matches against Adelaide, with his last goal securing a point for the Glory.
- Both of these sides have scored seven goals this season – a joint league low.
- Craig Goodwin has created more chances than any other Adelaide player this season, but is yet to provide an assist.
- Perth have won once in seven fixtures this season (D1 L5). They ended the last campaign with four wins in five (L1).
ROUTE TO GOAL
United have found goal-scoring tough this season. Or more to the point, they have made life tough for themselves.
In each match across the past month the Reds have chalked up more total shots than their opponents (58-36) but have been comfortably outscored (5-10) such has been their haphazard decision-making, execution and general profligacy in front of goal.
Marcelo Carrusca, who has found himself out of favour in Amor’s set-up, notched the only Adelaide goal – a late consolation penalty – in last week’s away loss to Melbourne Victory, while the Reds’ outright leading scorer this season, Pablo Sanchez, spends more time sitting on the pine than he does seeing action.
For Perth, Sidnei’s first-half stoppage-time headed goal against City was not only a rare bright spot in a nightmare evening, it was Glory’s only score for the whole of November.
Perth’s bid to lure back last year’s Irish striking sensation Andy Keogh was denied recently, while Jamie Maclaren’s off-season defection to Brisbane Roar also robbed Perth plenty of forward potency.
