After Adelaide United Captain and current Socceroo, Craig Goodwin, scored Australia’s opening goal of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ on Wednesday morning, the winger gave his thoughts on his performance and the match against reigning world champions, France.
30-year-old Goodwin made the most of his World Cup debut, taking just nine minutes to score past France Captain and goalkeeper, Hugo Lloris.
It wasn’t to be for the Socceroos, though, with Les Bleus running-out 4-1 winners in the end.
Post-game, Goodwin spoke of his pride at scoring for his country on the world’s biggest sporting stage, but was quick to highlight the need to shift focus to the nation’s next match against Tunisia.
Goodwin’s summary:
“Obviously (I have) mixed emotions.
“It’s an incredibly proud moment, as I wanted to represent my country in the World Cup and to score is an amazing feeling, but mixed feelings because we lost the game.
“Scoring any goal is pure joy and almost indescribable.
“To score at a World Cup and against the reigning World Cup champions is a moment I’ll remember for the rest of my life.
“But, for now, it’s still business.
“We have two more games and we want to do the best we can and try and win those games.
“(Now) we regroup, we recover, we analyse the game on where we could do better… and prepare for the game against Tunisia.”
