Adelaide United coach Carl Veart says his squad has come back in good shape and are ready for a strong preseason.
The Reds officially began their preseason training today, with the majority of the squad present for the first session.
Speaking to the media at Coopers Stadium following the first training session, Veart said the players are excited to return for preseason and ready to work hard.
“The boys were in very good spirits. It’s always good to be back”.
New recruits Archie Goodwin and Dylan Pierias joined the group for the first time.
Veart praised both players’ quality and work ethic and is confident they will make a positive impact.
“We’ve brought in young Archie Goodwin, who we believe is a quality number nine”
“I’ve known Dylan for a long time as well, since he was a junior player, and he’s a great, great guy. Works extremely hard, and has a lot of speed as well. It’s something that we need, and the way that we want to play football”
Dutch recruit, Bart Vriends, was missing from this morning’s session as he finalises his move to Australia from the Netherlands, but will be joining his new teammates in the coming weeks.
Veart says the defender will bring much needed experience and leadership to the Reds young squad.
“He’s played at a very high level for a long time and brings a lot of leadership, not just on the pitch but off the pitch. It’s a great acquisition for the club.”
“We made no secret that we were missing that little bit of leadership on and off the pitch last season and Bart will certainly address that”.
Veart also emphasised the importance of this year’s preseason, with the Australia Cup kicking off in July.
“It’s going to be a very long pre-season and with the (Australia) Cup coming a bit earlier for us, it’s important we have some good training sessions and hopefully get some games in before the first cup game”.
The Reds will face Blacktown United on Wednesday 31 July at Landen Stadium.
