Adelaide United extended their unbeaten start to the season with a thrilling 3-2 comeback victory over Brisbane Roar on Saturday night. Head Coach Carl Veart addressed the media post-match, reflecting on his team’s resilient performance and second-half revival. Here’s what the boss had to say:
Veart on the win against Brisbane Roar…
“We were a little lethargic and sloppy in the first half, but once we raised our intensity and intent in the second half, we were much better. I’m very happy for the boys. The conditions were tough for us, but to bounce back from being 2-1 down at halftime shows real character.”
Veart on what went wrong in the first half…
“We were too casual and sloppy. We created our own problems. We had a lot of possession but weren’t doing much with it. Our pressure on the ball wasn’t there, and there was too much space between our lines, so our passes were too long. That made it easier for them. We adjusted at halftime, and it was much better in the second half.”
Veart on the halftime message…
“I told the boys we didn’t come here for a holiday. We came to win, and they needed to lift their intensity and intent. From the first whistle to the last in the second half, they did that. That’s what our football looks like when we play the way we should.”
Veart on the change in formation in the second half…
“The change was to create more space to play through the central areas. We had opportunities to play through the middle, but in the first half, Luca wasn’t holding the ball up for us, and the passes from our defenders were too long, making it easier for Brisbane to cut out. So we made a few adjustments, moving to more of a 4-3-3 to give us more space in the middle, which had been a bit congested.”
Veart on the performance of Archie Goodwin…
“Archie is a natural number nine, and we don’t have many natural strikers who are as deadly in and around the box. His movement was excellent tonight. He’ll take a lot of belief from that performance. He’s worked hard since joining the club, and we’ve spent a lot of time getting his body right. I think you saw the results of that tonight.”
