Adelaide United Head Coach Carl Veart provided key updates ahead of the Original Rivalry clash against Melbourne Victory.
Veart discussed the latest on squad fitness, his expectations for the game, and the special atmosphere surrounding the famous fixture. Here’s what Veart had to say:
Veart on James Delianovās fitness…
āItās just a precaution [missing training]. He did some extra gym work today instead of coming on the pitch. Weāll assess him tomorrow to see where heās at. Itās just a little bit of soreness from the Wellington game. He pulled up a little sore, so we had an easier week for him. He was on the pitch yesterday but had the day off today for extra gym work.ā
Veart on the near sell-out crowd at Coopers Stadium…
āWe had a great crowd last time we were here, but unfortunately didnāt get the result. Tomorrow, I think it will be a sell-out. The atmosphere will be great, especially with Melbourne Victory bringing a lot of supporters as well. Itās always a big game, and as a player, these are the matches you live for.ā
Veart on the comparison of home and away form…
āThereās no real change in what we do at home or away. Yes, weāve let a few points slip at home that we wouldnāt normally let slip, but that happens. Our away form has been excellent, but it would be nice to have some of those wins at home. Hopefully, we can start that tomorrow.ā
Veart on the significance of the rivalry…
āIām pretty sure all the players that have played in the A-League know thereās a big rivalry between us and Victory. Itās been there since day one, and itās a big game for both sets of supporters. Our playing group, especially the Australians whoāve grown up with this rivalry, let the other players know what it means. Itās always an exciting game.ā
Veart on Melbourne Victoryās recent form…
āYou say their form has been a little bit indifferent, but theyāve had some really good moments in games. Look at last weekāthey were winning with a few minutes to go. Weāve been down that path ourselves. These kinds of games can change the course of your season, so itās important we keep our focus, discipline, and play the way we have been.ā
Veart on the importance of maintaining focus…
āThese games always have a little bit more importance. Itās pretty much a derby for us. The intensity will be higher than usual, so itās important that we stay focused on what weāve done well this year. If we do that, Iām sure weāll get the result we want.ā
Veart on player mentality going into the game…
“The mental side is crucial in these big matches. Our boys know whatās at stake, and weāve worked hard on staying sharp and disciplined. Itās all about handling the pressure, especially in front of a full house.”
Veart on learning from past mistakes…
“Weāve had moments this season where weāve dropped points, and the players have taken those lessons on board. It’s about consistency nowāapplying what weāve learned and not letting those little lapses affect us in key moments.”
Veart on maintaining momentum…
“When you look at our form over the last few weeks, weāve built up a strong momentum. Itās important we keep that going and keep pushing, especially with how close the league is this season. We can’t afford to slow down.”
