Adrian Stenta spoke to United Media ahead of Adelaide United’s away trip to Western United, with Finals Football already secured and full focus now on building momentum for the post-season.
With two games remaining in the regular season, Stenta’s side will look to sharpen their form and test squad depth, while remaining true to the principles that have delivered one of the most consistent campaigns in club history.
Here’s what Stenta had to say ahead of Sunday’s match…
Stenta on the past fortnight off the pitch…
“It’s been a really productive two weeks. We’ve used it to get good conditioning into some players and freshen others up who’ve had a heavy workload. Now we’re really looking forward to getting back out on the park and playing games again, because that’s what we’re here for.”
Stenta on the Melbourne Victory defeat…
“We probably weren’t happy with the offensive side of our game. We struggled to create chances and didn’t put them under enough pressure, especially in the first half. But we responded well to going behind, and once we equalised, we went for it. Whether we drew or lost wasn’t the focus—it was about putting in a solid performance, and we felt we did that.”
Stenta on Erin Healy and squad health…
“Erin was close to selection this week, but we’ve decided to give her another week and we’re hopeful she’ll be back for the Sydney game. Chelsie’s in a similar situation. If not next week, then definitely for the elimination final. The rest of the group is healthy.”
Stenta on playing possible finals opponents…
“We’ll stick to our usual game plan and principles. We’re not here to play games. If we play the way we want to and do it consistently, we’re good enough to get results. We won’t deviate from that.”
Stenta on Claudia Jenkins’ national team call-up…
“It was a great experience for her. She’s come back really fresh and invigorated and physically fine. It’s a shame the games were cancelled, but she’s loved the environment and brought that energy back to the group. Same for Ilona and Sian with the Young Matildas—it’s great for their development.”
Stenta on the upcoming home final at Coopers Stadium…
“Nothing would make me happier than a big crowd. We saw at the Brisbane standalone game how great the atmosphere can be. We want to pack this place. We think we’re entertaining and well worth watching, and we really feed off the support at this venue.”
Stenta on what he wants from the last two games…
“I want to see the mentality of the group. Some would say there’s not much to play for, but that’s never been our mindset. We want to carry momentum forward, and I want to see who puts their hand up internally, because there’s pressure for spots. That’s what we need heading into finals.”
