Legacy Secured: Ethan Alagich Crowned 2025 Aurelio Vidmar Medalist

A new chapter has been written in the Alagich family story — and it’s one that will live long in Adelaide United history.

Ethan Alagich has been named the 2025 Aurelio Vidmar Medalist, following a season that showcased not only his footballing ability, but also his leadership, endurance, and maturity beyond his years. At just 21, the midfielder joins an elite group of Reds to receive the Club’s highest individual honour — and remarkably, becomes the third Alagich to be etched into Club folklore.

His father, Richie Alagich, was the inaugural winner of the medal in 2003/04 in the Clubs only season in the NSL. His aunt, Dianne Alagich, claimed the first ever women’s equivalent in 2008/09. And now, 21 years after Richie’s name was first engraved on the Club’s honour board, Ethan takes his place beside them — a generational achievement unmatched in Australian football.

The Making of a Medalist

Ethan’s journey began in the grassroots fields of Adelaide’s northern suburbs — first at Valley View, then Port Adelaide, and later Adelaide Croatia. He was selected for Football SA’s NTC program in 2016 and joined the Reds’ youth system in 2019. Quietly, patiently, and determinedly, he rose through the ranks.

In 2023, he was named Rising Star alongside Nestory Irankunda. In 2024/25, he became the Reds’ most dependable midfielder — starting every A-League Men’s match, playing 2,548 minutes, and covering over 308 kilometres of ground. His commitment, consistency, and contribution made him indispensable.

Some of his standout moments this season include:

  • Scoring his first professional goal in Round 10 against Western Sydney
  • Netting the winner in the Original Rivalry against Melbourne Victory in Round 15
  • Delivering 2 assists and creating 26 key passes
  • Posting 87% pass accuracy across 1,507 passes
  • Leading all U21 outfield players in the league for minutes played

He was the only player in the squad to start all 26 matches, missing just 23 minutes all season.

A Coach’s View

Reds Head Coach Carl Veart, who has overseen Alagich’s development since his senior debut, paid tribute to his growth and dedication:

“Ethan’s had a fantastic season. He’s worked incredibly hard and just kept improving every week. What’s impressed me most is his consistency — he’s stepped up in big moments, shown real maturity, and has become such an important part of our midfield. For a young player to play every game and lead the league for minutes shows how reliable and driven he is. I’ve really enjoyed coaching him and watching his development, both on and off the pitch. To see him win this award — and to follow in the footsteps of his dad and aunt — it’s something really special, and I think the whole Club is proud of what he’s achieved.”

A Legacy That Runs Deep

For Ethan, the award is a symbol of how far he’s come — and how far he’s destined to go. In a season where Adelaide United blooded young talent, Ethan emerged not just as a contributor, but as a cornerstone. His ability to connect play, control tempo, and lead by example made him essential to the Reds’ engine room.

And if 2024/25 is any indication, Ethan Alagich is only just getting started.
