Tsiounis: “An opportunity to bounce back in front of our home fans”

Adelaide United Women’s Head Coach Theo Tsiounis says his team is eager to respond on Saturday when they take on Sydney FC at ServiceFM Stadium, following a challenging opening round defeat away to the Central Coast Mariners.

Despite the scoreline in Gosford, Tsiounis believes the Reds showed clear signs of progress and will look to extend those positive moments in front of home supporters.

Tsiounis on the Central Coast result…
“Obviously, it was a disappointing result from a scoreline perspective. However, we always refer back to our identity and our team model – what does that look like, and are we seeing elements of that? When we reviewed the game, we saw moments we want to continue to stretch out and lengthen. So although it wasn’t a great result, there were a lot of positive signs that we want to carry forward.”

Tsiounis on the squad’s mindset…
“The squad’s been fantastic. The players are exceptional and very professional. We’ve got a model, we’ve got processes, and strong foundations – so it’s all objective. We go back to those principles to make sure our feedback is accurate and we stay on track. The group is united and in a good space.”

Tsiounis on facing Sydney FC…
“They’ve got a number of strong individuals and they’ve historically been a successful team. They gave Melbourne City a tough time – they’re aggressive off the ball and have players who can create in transition. It’ll be a really tough game, but also a great opportunity for us to bounce back and put what we’ve worked on in training into practice on game day.”

Tsiounis on his first home game as Head Coach…
“It’s an opportunity for everyone to get behind the girls. There’s some fantastic talent in this team, and the support of the Adelaide crowd gives us that extra edge. We’re really looking forward to having everyone behind us and making some noise at Gepps Cross.”

Tsiounis on squad changes…
“Fiona and Chelsie are coming into the squad – both are proven goalscorers and important players for us. They’ve been fighting off injuries, but they’re fresh and ready to go. It’s been hard to hold them back because they’re such eager and aggressive players. They’re both looking forward to doing what they do best – putting the ball in the back of the net.”

Tsiounis’ message to the fans…
“It’s an absolute privilege and honour to lead this team. Every time the players put on the shirt, they know they’re representing the state – not just themselves. So, to the fans, please come out, get behind the team, and make some noise. It makes a significant difference to the girls, and we can’t wait to play in front of a fantastic Adelaide crowd.”
