Adelaide United Head Coach Airton Andrioli says unity, trust, and belief will be crucial as the Reds prepare to face Western Sydney Wanderers at Coopers Stadium on Saturday night.
Speaking to media ahead of the clash, Andrioli reflected on a difficult week for the squad, the importance of supporting injured teammates, and the opportunity that lies ahead on home soil.
Andrioli on supporting Dylan Pierias…
“Everyone is feeling extremely disappointed for him. It’s not an easy thing, but unfortunately it happens in football. We had a quick chat and said, you’ve had your operation, now you’re on your way back. It’s very hard to find the right words in moments like this, but we’re going to miss him – not just as a player, but as a person around the group. He’s a very positive guy, brings a lot of energy, and we really like having him in the change room. Right now, we’re just giving him all the support he needs to come back bigger and stronger.”
Andrioli on keeping him involved during rehabilitation…
“It’s always good to have somebody like him around the group. He’ll be doing his recovery, and we’re putting a plan together to make sure he comes back the best way possible. Having him around can be a positive thing – for him and for the group.”
Andrioli on covering injuries in defence…
“That’s football sometimes. That’s why you need a big group and versatile players who can play in different positions. We do have players with similar characteristics, and now the focus is on the next player coming in. Everyone needs to understand what we have to do to get the results we want.”
Andrioli on trusting young players…
“Trust is a very important word, especially for young players. They need to feel that belief. The jump from youth football to elite level is big, and confidence is everything. We tell them to stick to their strengths and do what they do well. If they come on, they need to know that we trust them to do a job.”
Andrioli on building momentum and finishing chances…
“The message is simple – stay calm in those moments. When you get into the box, focus on your technique, find a teammate, and take your opportunities. Last week we were clinical when we needed to be, and we could have made the game easier. We just need to keep doing the right things consistently.”
Andrioli on the opportunity ahead at Coopers Stadium…
“We need to win games – that’s what builds confidence. Sometimes you play well and win, sometimes you play well and lose. What matters is resilience and doing the small things right. We have two home games, and this is a big opportunity for us. There’s nothing better than rewarding yourselves and your families with a big crowd at Coopers and putting another three points on the board.”
