Andrioli proud of fight as Reds fall short in 3-2 thriller against Newcastle

Adelaide United Head Coach Airton Andrioli said he was proud of his side’s performance but left frustrated after the Reds went down 3-2 to Mark Milligan’s Newcastle Jets on Sunday.

Goals from Yaya Dukuly and Juan Muñiz helped inspire a second-half comeback at Coopers Stadium, however Adelaide couldn’t find the final moment to complete the turnaround.

Andrioli on Craig Goodwin’s injury update
“We don’t know. Obviously, it’s a groin injury, but we don’t know to what extent or whatever. So he needs to have some scans tomorrow, then we will know a bit more. So we’re hoping that it is nothing too bad, but obviously we need to take that sort of a medical view of the situation or the injury, and then we’ll know a bit more.”

Andrioli on VAR and the overturned goal
“Sometimes common sense is not very common. I said this before, if anyone wants to put a petition up… to get rid of it, I’m happy to sign. It’s destroying the game… we already don’t know if we can celebrate. Normally, we don’t. We’re waiting for the referee or waiting for the VAR decision.”

Andrioli on his immediate thoughts and the fine margins
“It was a game of final margins. I’m extremely proud of my team, the boys, the effort they put in. I’m extremely disappointed with not getting anything out of this game, because we knew exactly how the threats and how they can hurt you, and we were our own worse enemy in some points. I think we control the game in the first half, we nullify the things they want to do… from two good football teams playing tonight, they were just more clinical. Overall, I’m extremely proud, but also very disappointed. We got nothing out of this game.”

Andrioli on the emotional swings and staying focused through stoppages
“We sort of stop, start and things like that… I think the margin is so close, just leave it as it is and we move on. It’s difficult. That’s the danger of the way the game is going… we want to keep our game flowing, because a beautiful game, so we don’t ruin that.”

Andrioli on Juan Muñiz’s role, match fitness, and the creative trade-off
“We needed creativity. He needs to play football matches to get his fitness level up. I thought he did a good job… there will be moments you lose a ball because you’re trying to be creative… taking him off in the second half was a matter of feeling like we needed more energy… you gain a little bit and you lose in some other aspects of the game. But overall, I think he did a good job.”

Andrioli on missed chances and the frustration of not being clinical
“That’s an easy answer. It’s a frustrating thing. Nobody goes there wanting to miss or not score… that’s football.”

Andrioli on defensive changes, individual errors, and regrouping
“The mistakes were not nothing to do with the collective… more individual errors, a little pass over here or there… that can happen. What happened, happened… I’m extremely disappointed that we didn’t get more out of the game, and I’m extremely happy for what we produce in the game. We have to regroup now. We’ve got a game away against Sydney next week, and we need to be ready for that.”

Andrioli on responding to a tough run and what comes next
“We need to put what’s behind us, leave it behind us and move forward… every game in this league will bring you a challenge… it’s a matter of learning from it, making sure that we are more clinical, continue to work to take our chances and maybe eliminate some of those errors… so that we can be a little bit more consistent and get a better outcome.”

Andrioli on Yaya Dukuly’s goal and building confidence
“It’s great… he’s a player that should be scoring. It’s great to see him score his first goal of the season, and we hope that’s going to encourage him and give him the confidence to do that more often, because we need that from a player like him… I’m happy for him tonight.”
