Adelaide United Ninja A-League coach Theo Tsiounis praised his side’s game management and growth after a professional 2-0 win over Brisbane Roar, extending the Reds’ strong defensive form with another clean sheet.
Tsiounis highlighted the group’s ability to control key moments away from home, the impact of the bench in challenging conditions, and the influence of senior leaders as the team heads towards the final games of the season.
Tsiounis on his immediate reaction to a superb 2-0 win in Brisbane…
“I thought it was a great performance and a comfortable win. It felt as though we were always in control of the game against a very good Brisbane side.”
Tsiounis on what pleased him most about the performance…
“Understanding how to manage the game in key moments is always important. Knowing when and how to break the opposition’s momentum, or when to continue building our own, is crucial. When I compare the players from when I first started to what I see now, there has been significant growth in all of those areas.”
Tsiounis on Erin Healy’s form and her assist for Emily Hodgson…
“Erin is an amazing person and an even better footballer. We often sit back and enjoy what she’s able to do on the ball. Players like her are hard to come by. We know she has the ability to consistently produce high-quality actions, so it’s important that when she finds pockets of space, we win the race into the box and get numbers in and around those areas. Hodgson did really well to get herself into that position and score her second goal of the season.”
Tsiounis on leaders setting the standard and getting on the scoresheet…
“They have been exceptional all season. Ella [Tonkin] and Emily [Hodgson] always put the club first. Ella is a winner and has significantly developed her game, both on and off the ball. It’s difficult to think of a better centre-back in the league. When these players set those standards, it makes it easier for the younger players to follow in their footsteps.”
Tsiounis on the late pressing and impact from the bench…
“Our impact players were tremendous. We knew the game would open up with the heat and slower playing conditions, so being able to bring on players like Lara Gooch, Paige Zois, Holly Murray, Chelsie Dawber and Dylan Holmes was important. The changes took the game to another level, and we were unfortunate not to capitalise further.”
Tsiounis on the upcoming break and preparing for Perth on the 13th…
“Nothing beats playing games from my perspective. However, once again the break provides an opportunity to freshen up and also work on areas that can help us finish the season as strongly as possible.”
