For Ryan White, there will be nerves on Saturday night. There will be pressure, intensity, and a huge Semi-Final atmosphere waiting in Auckland as the Reds begin their Finals campaign against Auckland FC. But for the young midfielder, that pressure is something to embrace – not fear.
“I’m not going to treat it like a different game,” White said. “I’ll go in with the same intensity that I always do and just try to do my job.”
It’s a mindset that has helped define United’s rise this season. Grounded, hard-working and relentless. And now, after securing second place and a week off, the Reds head across the Tasman full of belief and ready for the challenge ahead.
White knows exactly what kind of test Auckland will provide. The two sides have already produced memorable clashes since Auckland were incepted last year, including a dramatic 4-4 draw in New Zealand and a tight 2-1 defeat earlier in the campaign back in Round 3, followed by a 1-1 draw in Adelaide in April. All matches were fiercely contested and played at high intensity. White expects nothing less this weekend.
“We know what Auckland are going to bring,” he said. “They’ll bring good fight, good intensity and they’re physical all across the pitch.”
But rather than shy away from that battle, White believes it suits the mentality developing within this United side.
“We’ll be ready,” he said confidently. “I guarantee it.”
That confidence has been building steadily behind the scenes. Even before knowing who their Semi Final opponent would be, White said the standards at training never dropped, with the squad embracing the Finals atmosphere from the very beginning.
“The vibes have been really high,” he said. “We’ve trained with the same intensity and same energy all week.”

That consistency has become a major strength of the group throughout the second half of the season, helping drive United’s ten-match unbeaten run into Finals. And for White personally, the growth has been just as significant.
The last time United travelled to Auckland earlier this season, he featured only briefly off the bench. Now, heading into the biggest match of his professional career so far, he feels like a completely different player.
“I’ve grown leaps and bounds since then,” he said. “Probably my consistency game to game is what I’m most proud of.”
Saturday night will also mark White’s first Finals campaign in professional football – an experience he admits he cannot wait for.
“Very, very excited,” he said. “It’s going to be exciting.”
While Finals football is often spoken about as a game for experienced players, White believes United’s youthful group can still thrive on the big stage.
“We’ve still got experienced boys here,” he said. “And for us younger boys, we just have to embrace it.”
The Reds know the job is only half done in Auckland, with a sold-out second leg waiting back home at Coopers Stadium next week. But first comes the challenge of taking on the Premiers on their own turf.
For Ryan White, that’s exactly what football is all about.
