Reds Bow Out of Australia Cup Against South Melbourne

Adelaide United’s Hahn Australia Cup campaign has ended at the first hurdle following a disappointing 2-1 defeat to South Melbourne at Lakeside Stadium on Thursday night.

Captain Craig Goodwin handed the Reds the perfect start with a fourth-minute opener, but goals from Bul Juach and Yuki Uchida completed the turnaround for the hosts and sent them through to the Round of 16.

Head Coach Airton Andrioli named a strong starting XI for United’s first competitive fixture of the 2026/27 campaign, with Goodwin leading an attack that also featured Juan Muñiz and Ryan White.

The Reds could not have asked for a better beginning.

Muñiz collected a loose ball and lifted a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Goodwin, who made no mistake to put United ahead in less than five minutes.

South Melbourne responded strongly after falling behind and gradually worked its way into the contest, applying pressure as the opening half progressed.

The hosts found their equaliser through Juach, whose spectacular strike left Joshua Smits with little chance and ensured the sides went into the break level.

United looked to regain control after half-time, but South Melbourne completed the turnaround in the 68th minute when Uchida found the back of the net to give the hosts a 2-1 advantage.

Luke Duzel came closest to finding an equaliser for the Reds during a difficult second half, but United was unable to produce the decisive final touch.

Andrioli introduced Anselmo, Amlani Tatu, Brody Burkitt and Harry Crawford as Adelaide pushed for a way back into the contest, but South Melbourne held firm to secure its place in the next round.

Speaking after the match, defender Panagiotis Kikianis offered an honest assessment of the performance.

“That wasn’t good enough. We need to find out why we were not good enough tonight. We played within our shell, and we all need a kick up the backside.”

United’s attention now turns to its AFC Champions League Elite Preliminary Round against Công An Hà Nội at Coopers Stadium on Tuesday, 11 August.
