Carl Veart admits his side were not good enough in Adelaide United’s 2-1 defeat to Melbourne Victory, but remained philosophical about its winless start to the season.
Veart said his side struggled to penetrate Victory in the final third and frequently gave away possession too cheaply at Coopers Stadium.
“At the end of the day we weren’t good enough tonight,” Veart told reporters in the post-match press conference.
“(We) had a lot of possession but we just didn’t really create enough opportunities to score goals and we just gave away far too much cheap possession.
“We weren’t even under pressure at times and were just giving the ball away.
“Melbourne Victory have a lot of good attacking players and they punished us.”
Adelaide started proceedings brightly, gaining the ascendancy before several niggling fouls disrupted the flow of the match from the midpoint of the opening 45 in the fiery clash.
“Tonight, I thought the first 20, to 25 minutes we were very good,” Veart said.
“Then we just started making a few mistakes and then the game was so stop, start that a lot of the momentum went out of the game in that first-half.
“So we’re disappointed but we have to get better.”
After four matches, the Reds are still yet to register a win.
However, Veart said there was no cause for major concern, adamant his team will be able to turn its fortunes around.
“It’s still early in the season,” he insisted after the Reds endured its first defeat of the campaign.
“We’re only four games in, there’s still a long way to go.
“We’ll have a good look at this game, look at the areas where we let ourselves down and we just have to keep improving.”
