Fiona Worts scored her first-ever brace for Adelaide United in the Reds’ dominant 3-0 win over Newcastle Jets.
The 26-year-old opened the scoring with a clinical finish after receiving a return pass from Paige Hayward before dispatching her curling strike into the corner.
She then doubled Adelaide’s advantage after turning home Chelsie Dawber’s half-parried shot in the second stanza to take her tally to four goals for the campaign.
Worts praised the team’s performance as Adelaide consolidated its standing in the top four.
“I think that was a much better performance from us,” Worts told Paramount+ after the game.
“Three goals, big convincing win, clean sheet, so good game.”
Worts was on a hat-trick when Chelsie Dawber won a penalty and admitted her fellow attacker deserved to take it, despite being one goal shy of bagging treble.
“Chelsie was always going to want that penalty,” she explained.
“I’m not really one to fight over them. She’s chasing a Golden Boot, so fair enough – she won it.”
Adelaide has recorded three straight clean sheets to go along with its three consecutive wins.
The Englishwoman admitted the position they are currently in is encouraging, but knows they need to continue this momentum if they are to reach an elusive finals appearance.
“I think we’ve shown great improvement as the games have been going on,” she said.
“Keeping more clean sheets, scoring more goals so it’s definitely looking promising for us.”
