Fiona Worts made history on Sunday after becoming just the first Red and third Liberty A-League player to score five goals in a match.
The English striker was simply magnificent in the Reds’ 8-2 trouncing of Brisbane Roar.
Only Kate Gill of Perth Glory and Melbourne City’s Hannah Wilkinson have achieved the feat in 2014 and 2021 respectively.
Worts now has nine goals for the season, leading the team and trails Wilkinson by one goal in the competition’s Golden Boot race.
Worts admitted that performance from an individual and collective perspective was quite unexpected.
“I think it came out of nowhere to be honest,” she told 10 Bold after the match as Adelaide recorded its biggest ever away triumph and second largest overall.
“I think we obviously wanted to win the game, we knew we had some goals the other day after (Melbourne) Victory’s performance (5-0 win against Western Sydney wanderers) the other day.”
The result consolidates United’s position in the top four after Perth Glory suffered a 4-0 defeat to Melbourne City.
Worts believed their display proved they belong in the top-four and hoped they will remain there to secure a maiden finals appearance.
“I think that sort of proves we deserve to be up there,” she stated.
“We just need to keep going for the rest of the season and hopefully we’ll stay there.”
The 26-year-old also reserved praise for her teammates after her impressive five-goal haul and acknowledged a performance of that scale can serve as a real confidence booster heading into the business end of the campaign.
“It’s always great when you’re scoring lots of goals,” Worts continued.
“Obviously a few girls got goals tonight and they put them on a plate for me to be honest.
“So it was definitely a confidence boost for me and for everyone else.”
