Adelaide United Captain Craig Goodwin was humbled to become the Club’s all-time leading scorer after his brilliant double helped the Reds secure a stunning 3-2 win over Sydney FC.
The United skipper was involved in all three goals, scoring a brace and grabbing an assist to consolidate Adelaide’s top-six aspirations.
Speaking to Paramount+ after the match, Goodwin admitted his side rode their luck at times but was delighted to come away with a vital three points.
“We were a bit lucky in the end scoring again two late goals, but it’s credit to this team,” he explained.
“Carl said before the match the most important thing is the three points.
“It doesn’t matter if we win ugly. At times in the game it was ugly but we got the three points.”
Goodwin’s first finish, a clinical header off Javi López’s incisive cross, saw the 30-year-old bag his 36th Isuzu UTE A-League goal and 42nd overall for the Reds to claim the milestone outright from Bruce Djite.
He then delivered an inch-perfect set-piece for George Blackwood to head home and haunt his former side, before netting the 95th minute winner.
The winger attributed his individual success to his teammates, but insisted lifting silverware is his ultimate objective instead of personal accolades.
“Obviously really honoured to overtake Bruce (Djite),” he said.
“I’m very humbled and I couldn’t be able to reach that mark without the teammates that I’ve had over the years.
“But at the end of the day that’s a nice record, but I want to win silverware with this Club.
“Obviously it’s a difficult ask with other teams in contention as well, but that’s the main goal.
“If my goals can help us towards silverware and towards the finals then that’s the most important to me.”
