In the lead up to Christmas, here at Adelaide United we are trawling through the archives to pick out 12 of the best goals scored by the Reds in December across a four part series.
Here are three top class goals to start whetting the appetite over this festive season.
Greg Owens’ wonder strike vs Newcastle Jets – 15/12/06 @ Hindmarsh Stadium
It was fitting that the engrossing match, frenetic and end-to-end in its nature, was decided by a goal of the highest order. With the score locked at 2-2 and time running out for a winner, cue Greg Owens. Newcastle had scored courtesy of two stunning strikes of their own, but the attacking midfielder was determined to outshine them and he certainly did. Owens found space just outside the box and cleaned out the top corner with a sumptuous curling effort after cutting on to his right foot.

Cássio finishes off impressive attacking move vs Wellington Phoenix – 05/12/08 @ Hindmarsh Stadium
Cássio rarely scored for the Reds but when he did manage to find the back-of-the-net he had a knack of converting goals which were aesthetically pleasing on the eye. The explosive Brazilian had earlier scored against Wellington to make it 3-1 after the break, but his second – 23 minutes later – was even better. Paul Reid orchestrated the play from midfield, linking up with Cristiano before executing a defence-splitting through ball to find the left-back. He controlled the ball before rifling past the goalkeeper from inside the area on the angle as Adelaide strolled to a 6-1 win.

Barbiero’s header secures win vs Brisbane Roar – 12/12/09 @ Suncorp Stadium
Adelaide were out to snap a six-game winless streak when they travelled to Brisbane for their Round 18 encounter. The preceding 77 minutes of action saw both teams huff and puff without any reward. However, in the 78th minute a swift counter attack culminated in Fabian Barbiero sealing the 1-0 victory. The ball found Mathew Leckie on the right flank, who checked inside before his left-footed cross picked out the onrushing Barbiero, and thumped his header into the net to round off an incisive offensive move.
