After Paul Izzo signed a new contract with Adelaide United to remain at the Club for a further two years we examine his time with the Reds.

The goalkeeper deputised for Eugene Galeković way back in December 2012 and would go on to amass seven appearances, before departing his hometown Club in search of regular playing time.

Ahead of the 2015/16 campaign he joined the Central Coast Mariners.

Two years later it was time for Izzo to return home and the 24-year-old has since taken his game to another level and asserted himself as the undisputed number one.

Izzo’s shot-stopping ability is arguably his greatest attribute along with his confidence in collecting high crosses into the box.

Match winning performance helps down Victory

Izzo produced an individual masterclass as Adelaide defeated Melbourne Victory at Etihad Stadium for the first time since 2006 in December 2017. The gloveman made six impressive saves which included denying Besart Berisha from the penalty spot, tipping his effort onto the upright before repelling a follow-up attempt. As the Reds held a 2-1 lead and reduced to nine players, Izzo pulled off arguably his best save on the evening, tipping wide Ersan Gülüm’s header.

Penalty shootout heroics fall agonisingly short

As Adelaide’s 2018/19 semi-final clash with Perth Glory went to a shootout due to the epic contest finishing 3-3 after extra-time, it was Izzo’s time to shine. Despite the eventual heartbreaking loss, the goalkeeper could hold his head high after making three saves to thwart Diego Castro, Jason Davidson and Shane Lowry.

Back-to-back FFA Cup triumphs

Izzo played a key role in both of United’s FFA Cup Final victories in 2018 and 2019. A 2-1 win over Sydney FC was followed up by a 4-0 drubbing of Melbourne City a year later to add to his silverware haul with his hometown team. No doubt a special moment.
