Adelaide United fell 6-1 in a tough outing against Canberra United in Round 10 of the Westfield W-League 2017/2018 at McKellar Park on Sunday evening.

Ivan Karlovic fielded an unchanged starting XI, the line-up that gave Sydney FC a scare last round which included the likes of Laura Johns, Makenzy Doniak, Alyssa Mautz and Alex Chidiac.

Canberra were emphatic early on as Ellie Carpenter opened the scoring just minutes into the match, with a tidy finish off Michelle Heyman’s cut-back.

It wasn’t long before the Reds equalised through their deadly duo as Alyssa Mautz latched onto Makenzy Doniak’s cross from the by-line.

After a frenetic start and end-to-end chances in warm conditions, Canberra regained the lead through Elise Thorsnes in the 37th minute, and Ashleigh Sykes then furthered the lead before half-time.

Canberra continued to fire in the second period as Thorsnes completed her hat-trick and Karly Roestbakken got on the scoresheet, as the hosts finished their opportunities.

Key moments:

2’ | Toni Pressley tries her luck from the halfway line, launching an effort from kick-off that strikes the frame of goal.

3’ | GOAL: Carpenter fires home the opening goal, following Heyman’s break down the left and cut-back.

10’ | GOAL! Mautz equalises, finishing exquisitely after some brilliant work from the by-line by Doniak.

34’ | Chance! Mautz’ wild strike is blocked by Clare Hunt after a scramble in the penalty area.

37’ | GOAL: Thorsnes regains the lead for her side, hitting in Sykes’ cross from the back-post.

43’ | GOAL: Sykes and Thorsnes link-up again, this time it is Sykes who makes it 3-1 from a cross.

47’ | GOAL: Thorsnes grabs her second as she capitalises on Sykes’ effort that ricocheted off the post.

53’ | GOAL: Roestbakken sees her shot parried away by Sarah Willacy, but it still finds the back of the net.

54’ | GOAL:  Thorsnes caps off her hat-trick making it 6-1.

70’ | Alex Chidiac collects a loose ball and fires, forcing a save out of Hayley Kopmeyer.
