AUFC Women re-sign Grace Abbey

Adelaide United is excited to announce the re-signing of defender Grace Abbey for the upcoming Westfield W-League 2017/18 season.

Abbey, who first joined the Reds in 2015, returns to the Club on a one-year contract. 

After making four appearances during the 2015/16 season, Abbey enjoyed a breakout campaign last season featuring in nine matches for the Reds.

The 18-year-old established herself as a strong and versatile defender, able to be deployed either as a centre-back or at right-back and has also represented the Young Matildas.

She has even played in midfield in the Women’s National Premier League recently with Adelaide City.

AUFC Women Head Coach, Ivan Karlović, was delighted Abbey put pen-to-paper on a new one-year deal.

“Grace is a reliable option to have in the team and can play in a number positions,” he said.

“Last season Grace was an important player in the squad and her versatility was extremely beneficial to the team.

“She started a lot of matches and it’s great to have her on board for another year.” 

Abbey said she was ecstatic to have re-signed with the Club and discussed some of her strengths she will be able to offer the team.

“It feels amazing to be back playing in a red kit,” she said. “it’s my third season this year and I am so excited to start. 

“I’m someone who will never give up, will put my body on the line for the team, and no matter what will stay positive and support my team mates. 

“I’m also really energetic and focused to achieve my goals, individually and as a team.”

Abbey also revealed she acquired plenty of experience playing regularly last campaign and stated the Reds are desperate to qualify for the top four. 

“Last year’s W-League season was another stepping stone for me and I gained a lot of experience from playing alongside some amazing teammates. 

“Last year was another step closer into the growth of Club and reaching finals football, and now it’s time to take it even further this year.”
