Elsey discusses Sydney draw and emu celebration

Jordan Elsey believes Adelaide United competed well against premiers Sydney FC after a 1-1 draw at ANZ Stadium on Thursday night.

Elsey got himself on the scoresheet with a powerful header and thought the team put in another solid shift.

“They’ve been the benchmark all season so it was definitely a good test for us,” he told FOX Sports after the game.

“I thought the boys played well and we spoke about how many sacrifices we were making for this (being in the New South Wales hub), so we’re putting all our effort in and we’re doing alright.”

It was just the 26-year-old’s third Hyundai A-League goal of his career and first since February 2018.

He explained the thought process behind the emu celebration, something which has become synonymous with the centre-back, whenever he finds the back of the net.

“The emu I don’t know what it is to be honest,” he jokingly said after first celebrating in that fashion following his maiden Reds goal back in January 2014.

“I mean it’s unique, no one else does it so I’ll just stick with it, I don’t score much so when it comes out it’s a special moment.”

Adelaide must now beat Melbourne City on Tuesday and rely on favourable results to give themselves the best chance of securing finals football.

Western United currently lie five points adrift of Carl Veart’s outfit in seventh place but still have four regular season matches remaining.

“We’ve been watching every game,” Elsey revealed.

“As Carl said, control the controllable – do what we can do, and I think it’s working so far.”
